DepEd Strengthens Reading and AI Skills to Prepare Students for the Future

Philippine Education Pushes for Stronger Learning Foundations While Embracing Artificial Intelligence

The Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) is taking a balanced approach to education reform by strengthening students' reading, writing, and mathematics skills while preparing schools for an increasingly AI-driven future. The initiative reflects the government's broader vision of equipping learners with both foundational academic knowledge and modern technological competencies that will remain valuable throughout their education and future careers.

DepEd Strengthens Reading and AI Skills to Prepare Students for the Future

Education Secretary Sonny Angara recently emphasized that artificial intelligence is becoming a permanent part of society, making it essential for both teachers and students to understand how AI works and how it can be used responsibly. However, DepEd continues to stress that technology should complement—not replace—the essential skills of literacy, comprehension, and critical thinking.

As education systems worldwide adapt to rapid technological advancements, the Philippines is working to ensure that its learners remain globally competitive without losing focus on the basics that drive long-term academic success.

Reading, Writing, and Math Remain the Top Priority

Before students can fully benefit from advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, they need a strong academic foundation.

According to Secretary Angara, DepEd's immediate focus remains improving reading comprehension, writing proficiency, mathematics, and science education. These core competencies continue to be viewed as the building blocks for lifelong learning and future workforce readiness.

Rather than allowing AI to become a shortcut for learning, the department wants students to develop genuine understanding and problem-solving abilities. Reading comprehension, in particular, remains one of the strongest predictors of academic achievement across nearly every subject.

This emphasis aligns with educational best practices worldwide, where literacy and numeracy continue to serve as the cornerstone of effective learning.

Artificial Intelligence Becomes Part of Modern Education

Artificial intelligence is no longer considered a futuristic concept—it is rapidly becoming part of daily life, business, healthcare, finance, and education.

Recognizing this shift, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. highlighted during his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA) that the country must prepare for an AI-powered future. He announced that the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has launched large-scale AI training programs expected to reach approximately 1.8 million participants, including students, teachers, and parents.

DepEd plans to complement these national efforts by helping educators become more familiar with AI tools before expanding AI literacy among students.

Secretary Angara explained that teachers must first understand digital technologies so they can confidently guide learners in using AI responsibly, ethically, and productively.

Rather than treating AI as a replacement for learning, DepEd aims to teach students how to use it as a tool for research, creativity, innovation, and problem-solving.

Teaching Responsible AI Use Instead of AI Dependence

One growing concern among educators worldwide is students relying too heavily on AI to complete assignments.

DepEd recognizes this challenge but views it as an opportunity to strengthen digital literacy instead of simply restricting technology.

Students will be encouraged to understand how AI generates information, evaluate its accuracy, verify sources, and apply critical thinking before accepting AI-generated content as factual.

By promoting responsible AI use, schools hope to develop learners who can collaborate effectively with technology while maintaining independent thinking and strong analytical skills.

This educational approach reflects a growing global trend that values AI literacy alongside traditional academic competencies.

Academic Recovery Programs Continue to Support Learners

DepEd is also continuing its Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL) Program, which has entered its second year.

The initiative provides additional tutorials and targeted learning support for students who may have fallen behind academically. These interventions are designed to help struggling learners strengthen their skills before advancing to higher grade levels.

Academic recovery remains a significant component of the department's long-term education reform strategy as schools continue addressing learning gaps that emerged over recent years.

The continued investment demonstrates DepEd's commitment to ensuring that no learner is left behind while raising national education standards.

Senior High School Curriculum Offers Greater Flexibility

Another important reform involves the evolving Senior High School curriculum.

Students will enjoy greater flexibility when selecting subjects that align with their career goals, college aspirations, or entrepreneurial interests.

DepEd is also strengthening Technical Professional Education opportunities, allowing learners to explore more practical career pathways while developing workplace-ready skills.

Additionally, work immersion programs will be expanded, with many students expected to complete the equivalent of at least one semester of workplace experience through internships or on-the-job training.

These real-world learning experiences aim to better prepare graduates for employment, higher education, or business ownership.

Investing in Teachers Through Digital Training

Successful education reform depends heavily on teacher development.

To support educators, DepEd has adjusted the academic calendar from four terms to three, creating more opportunities for teachers to participate in professional development without reducing classroom instruction time.

The department is also expanding online training focused on digital technologies, information technology skills, and modern instructional methods.

By improving teachers' digital competencies, DepEd hopes educators will be better equipped to introduce emerging technologies—including AI, analytics, and data science—to future generations of learners.

Teacher development remains one of the department's most significant long-term investments.

Mental Health and Safer Learning Environments

Education reform extends beyond academics.

Secretary Angara emphasized the importance of reducing stress among students by creating safer, healthier, and more supportive school environments.

Recognizing the growing mental health needs of learners, DepEd is addressing the shortage of guidance counselors by hiring guidance counselor associates to provide additional emotional and psychological support.

These efforts complement broader initiatives aimed at making schools more peaceful, inclusive, and conducive to learning.

Supporting student well-being is increasingly viewed as essential for improving both academic performance and overall personal development.

Building a Stronger Reading Culture

Perhaps one of DepEd's most significant priorities is improving functional literacy.

The department plans to invest more heavily in reading initiatives, particularly in municipalities where literacy rates remain below expectations.

These efforts include increasing the availability of books in schools, funding community reading programs, and reviewing instructional methods to improve reading outcomes.

Rather than encouraging students to memorize information, educators will place greater emphasis on helping learners understand, analyze, and apply what they read.

Developing strong reading comprehension skills supports success across every academic subject while preparing students for lifelong learning.

Looking Ahead

DepEd's latest education reforms demonstrate a clear commitment to balancing innovation with strong academic fundamentals.

While artificial intelligence continues transforming industries around the world, the department recognizes that students first need excellent reading, writing, mathematics, and critical thinking skills to use technology effectively.

By investing in teachers, expanding digital learning opportunities, strengthening literacy programs, improving mental health support, and modernizing senior high school education, DepEd hopes to prepare Filipino students for success in higher education, future careers, and an increasingly digital society.

As AI becomes more integrated into everyday life, these reforms position Philippine education to embrace technological change without losing sight of the timeless value of strong foundational learning.

DepEd Cuts Teacher Paperwork by 57%, Giving Educators More Time for Teaching

Department of Education Reports Major Progress in Reducing Administrative Workload for Teachers

The Department of Education (DepEd) has announced a significant milestone in its ongoing education reform efforts, revealing that paperwork and administrative tasks assigned to public school teachers have been reduced by 57% nationwide. The development marks a major step toward allowing educators to dedicate more of their time and energy to classroom instruction rather than office-related responsibilities.

DepEd Cuts Teacher Paperwork by 57%, Giving Educators More Time for Teaching

According to Education Secretary Sonny Angara, the reduction covers various documentation requirements, office-related tasks, and other administrative responsibilities that have traditionally consumed a considerable portion of teachers' working hours. The initiative aims to ensure that educators can focus on delivering quality instruction and improving student learning outcomes.

For many teachers, excessive paperwork has long been one of the biggest challenges in balancing classroom responsibilities with administrative obligations. The latest update signals DepEd's commitment to addressing this concern through practical reforms that prioritize both teachers' welfare and the quality of education.

A 57% Reduction in Administrative Tasks

The reported 57% decrease in paperwork reflects DepEd's continued effort to streamline processes and remove unnecessary administrative burdens from teachers.

For years, educators have expressed concerns about spending significant amounts of time completing reports, organizing documents, preparing office records, and handling various non-teaching assignments. These responsibilities often extended beyond school hours, limiting the time available for lesson planning, classroom preparation, and student engagement.

With fewer administrative requirements, teachers are now expected to have more opportunities to:

  • Prepare more effective lesson plans.
  • Develop engaging classroom activities.
  • Provide timely feedback to students.
  • Improve classroom management.
  • Participate in professional development.
  • Maintain a healthier work-life balance.

By reducing paperwork, DepEd hopes to ensure that teachers can devote more attention to the core purpose of education—teaching and helping students succeed.

More Non-Teaching Personnel to Support Schools

One of the key strategies behind the reduction in teacher workload is the continued hiring of non-teaching personnel across the country.

Secretary Sonny Angara said DepEd continues to recruit employees who will handle administrative functions that were previously assigned to teachers.

The department plans to deploy up to 5,000 Administrative Officers and Project Development Officers who will manage office-related responsibilities and other non-teaching duties inside public schools.

These personnel are expected to oversee tasks such as:

  • Administrative documentation
  • Office management
  • Processing school reports
  • Coordination of official records
  • Other support functions that do not require classroom teaching

By assigning these responsibilities to dedicated administrative staff, teachers can focus on lesson delivery, student assessment, and academic improvement rather than routine paperwork.

Protecting Teachers' Instructional Time

Secretary Angara emphasized that the primary objective of the reform is to protect teachers' instructional time.

Teaching remains the most important responsibility of educators, and every hour spent on paperwork is an hour taken away from preparing quality lessons or interacting with students.

Reducing unnecessary administrative duties allows teachers to:

  • Spend more time inside the classroom.
  • Improve instructional quality.
  • Create better learning experiences.
  • Offer additional support to struggling learners.
  • Strengthen student engagement.

Education experts have long recognized that minimizing administrative overload contributes to better teaching performance and improved educational outcomes. DepEd's latest initiative aligns with this principle by ensuring teachers can prioritize learning over paperwork.

Part of DepEd's Continuing Education Reforms

The reduction in paperwork is only one component of DepEd's broader reform agenda aimed at improving the country's education system.

The department continues to implement initiatives that seek to modernize school operations, strengthen institutional support, and improve teacher welfare.

By investing in additional non-teaching personnel and simplifying administrative procedures, DepEd aims to build a more efficient school environment where educators can maximize their expertise inside the classroom.

Teacher well-being remains an important factor in delivering quality education. When educators are supported with adequate administrative assistance, they are better positioned to focus on student learning, instructional innovation, and academic excellence.

Why This Matters

Teachers serve as the foundation of every education system. Allowing them to spend more time teaching instead of completing paperwork benefits not only educators but also students, parents, and entire school communities.

A reduced administrative workload may lead to:

  • Better classroom instruction.
  • Increased teacher productivity.
  • Improved student performance.
  • Enhanced teacher morale.
  • Stronger educational outcomes.
  • More efficient school operations.

As schools continue adapting to changing educational demands, providing teachers with the support they need remains essential for long-term success.

Looking Ahead

DepEd's announcement of a 57% reduction in paperwork represents meaningful progress toward creating a more teacher-centered education system.

With thousands of additional Administrative Officers and Project Development Officers expected to support schools, educators may soon experience even greater relief from non-teaching responsibilities.

Secretary Sonny Angara reiterated that the department's goal is to safeguard teaching time while continuously improving the quality of education delivered in public schools.

As these reforms continue to take effect, the education sector will closely monitor how reduced administrative workloads translate into better classroom experiences, stronger student achievement, and improved teacher satisfaction across the country.

For teachers who have long advocated for fewer administrative burdens, this development signals a positive shift toward allowing educators to do what they do best—teach, inspire, and shape the future generation.

Progressivism in Education: Why Learning by Doing Shapes Future-Ready Students

Progressivism in education is more than a teaching philosophy—it is an approach that encourages students to become active participants in their own learning. Instead of relying solely on lectures and memorization, progressive education emphasizes critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and real-world experiences. As education continues to evolve in the 21st century, progressivism remains one of the most influential approaches for preparing students to solve complex problems and adapt to a rapidly changing world.

Progressivism in Education: Why Learning by Doing Shapes Future-Ready Students

What Is Progressivism in Education?

Progressivism is an educational philosophy that places students at the center of the learning process. Rather than treating learners as passive recipients of information, it encourages them to explore, ask questions, experiment, and discover knowledge through meaningful experiences.

This philosophy gained popularity through the work of John Dewey, who believed that education should prepare learners for democratic participation and everyday life. According to progressive principles, students learn best when lessons connect to their interests, experiences, and real-life situations.

Key Principles of Progressive Education

Progressive education is guided by several core principles:

  • Student-centered learning: Lessons are designed around students' needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Learning by doing: Hands-on activities, experiments, and projects help students understand concepts more deeply.
  • Critical thinking: Students are encouraged to analyze information, solve problems, and make informed decisions.
  • Collaboration: Group work develops communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.
  • Real-world relevance: Learning connects classroom knowledge to everyday experiences and future careers.
  • Teacher as facilitator: Teachers guide discussions and provide support instead of simply delivering information.

These principles help create classrooms where curiosity and active participation drive learning.

Benefits of Progressivism in Education

Many educators support progressive education because it develops skills that extend beyond academic achievement.

Students often become more engaged because lessons are interactive and meaningful. They also gain confidence by participating in discussions, conducting research, and completing collaborative projects.

Progressive learning also strengthens essential 21st-century skills such as:

  • Communication
  • Critical thinking
  • Creativity
  • Collaboration
  • Problem-solving
  • Adaptability

These competencies are increasingly valued in higher education and modern workplaces.

Challenges of Progressive Education

While progressivism offers many advantages, it also presents several challenges.

Project-based learning may require additional classroom time, resources, and careful planning. Teachers need strong classroom management skills to guide discussions while ensuring learning objectives are achieved.

Assessment can also be more complex because student success is measured not only through exams but also through presentations, portfolios, participation, and practical performance.

Additionally, some students may initially struggle with the greater independence that progressive classrooms encourage.

Examples of Progressivism in the Classroom

Progressive teaching methods can be applied across different subjects.

For example, science students may conduct experiments instead of simply reading textbooks. History classes can include debates, role-playing historical events, or analyzing primary sources. Mathematics lessons may involve solving real-life financial or engineering problems, while language classes encourage creative writing, presentations, and collaborative storytelling.

Technology has also strengthened progressive education through interactive learning platforms, educational games, virtual simulations, and online collaboration tools.

Why Progressivism Matters Today

Modern society requires individuals who can think independently, communicate effectively, and adapt to new challenges. Employers increasingly seek graduates who can work collaboratively, solve problems creatively, and continue learning throughout their careers.

Progressive education aligns with these expectations by helping students develop practical knowledge alongside academic understanding. Instead of memorizing facts for examinations, learners gain the ability to apply what they know in meaningful situations.

As schools continue integrating technology and student-centered teaching methods, many progressive principles remain highly relevant in today's classrooms.

Final Thoughts

Progressivism in education continues to influence teaching around the world because it recognizes that learning is most effective when students actively participate in the process. By promoting inquiry, collaboration, creativity, and real-world application, progressive education prepares learners not only for academic success but also for lifelong learning and responsible citizenship.

Although implementing this philosophy requires thoughtful planning and flexibility, its focus on developing capable, confident, and curious learners makes it one of the most enduring educational approaches in modern education.

Perennialism in Education: Why Timeless Knowledge Still Matters in Modern Classrooms

Perennialism is one of the oldest educational philosophies, yet it continues to influence classrooms, universities, and academic discussions today. While modern education often emphasizes technology, creativity, and personalized learning, perennialism reminds us that some ideas, values, and forms of knowledge never lose their importance.

Whether you're a student, teacher, parent, or education enthusiast, understanding perennialism in education helps explain why classic literature, logical reasoning, and moral education remain central in many learning environments.

Perennialism in Education: Why Timeless Knowledge Still Matters in Modern Classrooms

What Is Perennialism in Education?

Perennialism is an educational philosophy that believes certain truths, principles, and ideas are universal and timeless. The word perennial means "lasting for a very long time," reflecting the belief that education should focus on knowledge that remains valuable across generations.

Rather than constantly changing the curriculum to match trends, perennialism encourages schools to teach enduring concepts that have shaped human civilization. Students are expected to develop critical thinking, intellectual discipline, and moral character through the study of classic works and fundamental subjects.

The Core Principles of Perennialism

Perennialism is built on several key beliefs:

  • Education should focus on universal truths instead of temporary trends.
  • The curriculum should emphasize classic literature, philosophy, mathematics, science, and history.
  • Teachers serve as knowledgeable authorities who guide students toward intellectual growth.
  • Students should develop reasoning, logical thinking, and ethical decision-making.
  • Learning should prepare individuals for life by strengthening the mind rather than simply training for specific careers.

These principles aim to create lifelong learners who can think deeply and make informed decisions.

Characteristics of a Perennialist Classroom

A classroom based on perennialism often looks different from one focused primarily on project-based or technology-driven learning.

Common characteristics include:

  • Reading classic books and influential texts
  • Teacher-led discussions and lectures
  • Socratic questioning to encourage critical thinking
  • Strong emphasis on logic and reasoning
  • High academic expectations
  • Focus on intellectual rather than vocational development

Students are encouraged to analyze ideas, debate perspectives, and understand the foundations of knowledge.

Advantages of Perennialism in Education

Perennialism offers several important benefits that continue to make it relevant today.

Develops Critical Thinking

Instead of memorizing facts, students learn to analyze, question, and evaluate ideas using logic and evidence.

Promotes Lifelong Learning

By focusing on enduring knowledge, students build intellectual habits that remain useful throughout their lives.

Strengthens Moral and Ethical Understanding

Many classic texts explore justice, responsibility, leadership, and human nature, encouraging thoughtful ethical reflection.

Provides a Strong Academic Foundation

Subjects such as mathematics, science, literature, and philosophy help students develop well-rounded intellectual abilities.

Criticisms of Perennialism

Although influential, perennialism also has limitations.

Some educators argue that:

  • It may overlook diverse cultural perspectives by emphasizing traditional Western classics.
  • The curriculum can seem disconnected from modern careers and rapidly changing technology.
  • It often provides fewer opportunities for hands-on, experiential learning.
  • Student interests and individual learning styles may receive less attention.

These criticisms have led many schools to combine perennialist ideas with more modern educational approaches.

Perennialism vs. Progressivism

One of the most common comparisons in educational philosophy is between perennialism and progressivism.

PerennialismProgressivism
Focuses on timeless knowledgeFocuses on current issues and experiences
Teacher-centeredStudent-centered
Classic literature and core subjectsProject-based and experiential learning
Intellectual disciplineCreativity and problem-solving
Stable curriculumFlexible curriculum

Both philosophies aim to educate students effectively, but they differ in how learning should occur and what should be taught.

Is Perennialism Still Relevant Today?

Despite advances in educational technology and modern teaching methods, perennialism remains highly relevant.

Many schools continue to teach classic literature, philosophy, mathematics, and history because these subjects build reasoning skills that technology alone cannot replace. Universities also rely heavily on timeless academic texts to encourage analytical thinking and informed debate.

In today's information-rich world, the ability to evaluate evidence, think critically, and understand enduring human values is arguably more important than ever.

Rather than replacing innovation, perennialism complements it by providing students with a solid intellectual foundation.

Final Thoughts

Perennialism in education emphasizes that while society changes, the pursuit of truth, wisdom, and critical thinking remains constant. By focusing on timeless ideas and intellectual development, this philosophy seeks to prepare students not only for careers but also for thoughtful, responsible citizenship.

Although modern classrooms often blend multiple educational philosophies, the principles of perennialism continue to shape quality education around the world. Its emphasis on reasoning, moral character, and enduring knowledge ensures that it remains an important part of educational discussions for years to come.

DepEd, Abbott Launch Child Nutrition Program

The Department of Education (DepEd) and Abbott have launched the Nutrition and Growth Champions Program, a new initiative aimed at combating child malnutrition by strengthening nutrition screening and awareness in schools and communities across the country.

The partnership combines DepEd's nationwide education network with Abbott's expertise in nutrition science to help schools identify children at risk of malnutrition early and provide timely support.

DepEd, Abbott Launch Child Nutrition Program

The initiative comes as child malnutrition remains a major public health concern. According to the 2025 Department of Science and Technology–Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) Updating Survey, 25.3% of Filipino children under five are stunted, marking the first increase in the country's stunting rate since 2015.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said partnerships like this strengthen school feeding and nutrition programs by equipping schools with the knowledge and tools needed to detect nutrition concerns early and connect children to appropriate support services.

Abbott Philippines Nutrition General Manager Angelico Escobar said the collaboration will help improve early identification of at-risk children while expanding nutrition awareness among schools and local communities.

The program will initially roll out in 100 pilot schools across Metro Manila, where more than 70,000 children are expected to receive nutrition screenings. Over 130 teachers and school health personnel will be trained as Growth Champions, conducting twice-yearly growth assessments and promoting nutrition education.

The initiative also supports the Abbott Center for Malnutrition Solutions (ACMS), which has trained more than 450 health workers and volunteers across 16 countries and screened over 118,000 children since 2023.

By integrating nutrition screening and education into schools, DepEd and Abbott aim to improve children's health, strengthen community awareness, and help more Filipino children reach their full potential.
