Carlito and Uswag Set for Takeoff: Philippine Eagles Poised for Historic Leyte Reintroduction

June 27, 2024 - Get ready to witness conservation in action! Two Philippine eagles, Carlito and Uswag, are set to be released in Leyte Island tomorrow, marking a historic moment for the country. This groundbreaking event signifies the Philippines' first-ever eagle reintroduction program, a collaborative effort between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), and various partners.

The release, scheduled for June 28th at 9am, will be livestreamed on PEF's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/phileaglefdn, giving everyone a chance to be part of this momentous occasion. Carlito, a six-year-old female, and Uswag, a three-year-old male, were both rescued and rehabilitated before being deemed fit for reintroduction.

This program aims to bolster the population of the critically endangered Philippine Eagle by releasing them into suitable habitats outside their usual range in Mindanao. The chosen location, the 4,000-hectare Marabong Watershed in Leyte, boasts ample food resources and ideal conditions for the eagles to thrive.

Celebrating a Collaborative Effort

The success of this program is a testament to the collective efforts of numerous organizations. The Mohammed Bin Zayed Raptor Conservation Fund, Insular Life, Forest Foundation Philippines, and the DENR all played crucial roles in making this initiative a reality. Additionally, the program extends its gratitude to:

  • LGU Burauen and Kagbana
  • Energy Development Corporation
  • Eastern Visayas State University
  • Rotary Club of Central Tacloban City
  • Australian Embassy - Australia in the Philippines
  • Mandai Nature
  • Kagbana Upland Farmers Association

Special Recognition for Support

The program acknowledges the invaluable contributions of various partners who ensured the smooth execution of this critical project:

  • The Department of National Defense (DND) and the Philippine Air Force (PAF) for facilitating the safe airlift of the eagles and translocation crew.
  • DENR XI and CENRO-Davao for assisting with securing the local transport permits.
  • Hon. Ma. Antonia "Toni" Yulo-Loyzaga and the Office of the DENR Secretary for supporting the construction of hack cages with the help of the Brgy. Kagbana community.
  • Forest Guards - the Bantay Kagurangan
  • Doc Bayani's Animal Wellness Clinic for their participation in the pre-transport check-up and aversion training of the eagles.
  • Eagle Cement Corporation and Carl Balita Review Center for sponsoring the logistical expenses of the team.

This momentous occasion marks a significant step towards the conservation of the Philippine Eagle. By working together, we can ensure the survival of this majestic bird for generations to come.

DICT Warns Public of Fake Land Rental Scheme for Free Wi-Fi Program

June 27, 2024 - The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), through its Free Public Internet Access Program Management Team (FPIAP-PMT), is advising the public to be wary of individuals offering or requesting information on land rentals supposedly connected to the Free Wi-Fi for All (FWFA) Program.

The DICT clarifies that the FWFA program, mandated by Republic Act No. 10929, solely focuses on providing free internet access in public areas across the Philippines. The program's funding is strictly allocated for service delivery and cannot be used for land rental or purchase.

The DICT urges the public to avoid engaging with anyone approaching them regarding land rentals for the FWFA program. They should not provide any information or copies of land ownership documents.

For transparency, the DICT reminds the public that all government procurement projects, including land rentals, undergo a public bidding process following established government regulations.

NBI Confirms Same Fingerprints for Bamban Mayor Alice Guo and Chinese Passport Holder Guo Hua Ping

June 27, 2024 - The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has made a significant discovery, revealing that Bamban Mayor Alice Guo and Chinese passport holder Guo Hua Ping share identical fingerprints. This revelation has raised serious questions about Mayor Guo’s true identity and citizenship.

Senator Risa Hontiveros, who disclosed the findings, expressed her suspicions that Mayor Guo was “a fake Filipino” masquerading as a citizen to facilitate criminal activities. The fingerprints match, confirming Hontiveros’s long-standing doubts.

“This confirms what I have suspected all along,” Hontiveros stated. “Pekeng Pilipino si Mayor Alice—or should I say, Guo Hua Ping. She is a Chinese national masquerading as a Filipino citizen to facilitate crimes being committed by POGO (Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations).”

The gravity of this situation has prompted Hontiveros to call on the Office of the Solicitor General to swiftly file a quo warranto case against Mayor Guo. “Napakalaking insulto ito sa mga botante ng Bamban, sa mga institusyon ng ating gubyerno, at sa bawat mamamayang Pilipino,” she emphasized. “This is the most substantial evidence for the removal of Mayor Alice from her post.”

Hontiveros also expressed gratitude to NBI Director Jaime Santiago for promptly addressing the fingerprint issue. She urged the Solicitor General’s office to hold Mayor Guo accountable for any crimes committed under her watch.

“This revelation is not the end,” Hontiveros asserted. “Guo Hua Ping, soon, we will know the full extent of your deception. We will dig deeper and locate the systemic roots of our POGO problem.”
