In 2024, a new federal law called the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA) was signed into law. This legislation requires ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to either sell TikTok’s U.S. operations or face a full ban.

The U.S. government argues that TikTok poses national security risks due to its ties to China. Officials are concerned about potential data access by the Chinese government and the influence the platform may have over American users—especially younger audiences.

TikTok challenged the law in court, claiming it violated free speech protections.
