DepEd Amends MATATAG Curriculum Guidelines to Offer Schools More Flexibility

September 18, 2024 - The Department of Education (DepEd) issued DepEd Order (DO) No. 012, s. 2024, amending the Policy Guidelines on the Implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum (DO 010, s. 2024). This revision aims to provide schools with more flexibility in implementing the curriculum while ensuring quality basic education.

The new order focuses on accommodating diverse school contexts, particularly for Grades 3 to 10. Schools now have two options for time allotment:

  • Option 1: All learning areas receive 45 minutes daily for five days, with Homeroom Guidance Program once a week for 45 minutes.
  • Option 2: Schools can choose uniform time allotments of 50, 55, or 60 minutes for specific learning areas based on their weekly frequency.

Schools may also propose other combinations not listed above, as long as they meet minimum time requirements for each subject and total learning contact time remains at least five hours and 30 minutes a day. These proposals require approval by the schools division superintendent or authorized representative.

The order emphasizes the continued use of the Mother Tongue as the medium of instruction but removes it as a separate subject. In-person learning remains the primary mode, with blended learning or distance learning options available for schools facing classroom shortages or emergencies.

Schools currently offering after-class reading and math intervention programs with sufficient teachers can continue doing so. Otherwise, they are advised to wait for upcoming policy guidelines on the National Reading and Mathematics programs.

This amendment allows schools to tailor the MATATAG Curriculum implementation to their specific needs, ensuring a more effective learning experience for students. The full order is now available on the DepEd website.
