Pinoy Father's Day 2024: Celebrating Tatay's Strength and Love

Father's Day in the Philippines is a time to honor our dads, or "tatays," for their unwavering love, strength, and sacrifices. This year, it falls on Sunday, June 16th, 2024! But did you know there's a fascinating history behind this celebration in our country?

A Shifting Tradition:

Believe it or not, Father's Day wasn't always celebrated in June. Back in the 1920s, Filipinos traditionally paid tribute to their fathers on the first Monday of December. This practice continued for decades until the late 1980s.

In 1988, President Corazon Aquino issued a proclamation officially recognizing Father's Day on the third Sunday of June. This aligned with the international practice of celebrating Father's Day in June. However, President Estrada tweaked things again in 1998, briefly moving both Mother's Day and Father's Day to the first Monday of December. Thankfully, the current June celebration stuck, and that's how we celebrate it today!

More than just a Hallmark Holiday:

For Filipinos, Father's Day is more than just cards and store-bought gifts. It's a day to express our deepest gratitude for the countless ways our fathers have supported us.

Here are some ways Filipinos traditionally celebrate Father's Day:

  • Family Gatherings: Filipinos love a good get-together! Expect large family meals filled with delicious Filipino dishes. It's a time for siblings, cousins, and extended family to come together and shower Tatay with love.
