The 2023-2024 End-of-School-Year Assessments in the Philippines: A Comprehensive Overview

The Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines has recently announced a series of nationwide assessments for the end of the school year 2023-2024. These assessments are aimed at identifying areas of improvement in reading and math skills among students from Grade 1 to Grade 6.

The Assessments

The assessments include the Rapid Math Assessment (RMA), the Comprehensive Literacy Assessment (CRLA) for Grades 1 to 3, and the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) for Grades 4 to 6. These assessments are designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of a student’s readiness for the next grade level and to identify areas that may require additional support or improvement.

The assessments will be administered from April 22 to May 10, 2024, with the CRLA starting on April 29, 2024. The administration of these assessments will be as follows:

  • Grade 1 beginning-of-the-school-year (BOSY) assessment tool Part 1 for learners currently enrolled in Kindergarten.
  • Grade 1 assessment tools for learners currently enrolled in Grade 1.
  • Grade 2 assessment tools for learners currently enrolled in Grade 2.
  • Grade 3 assessment tools for learners currently enrolled in Grade 3.

Orientation and Materials

To ensure a smooth administration of the assessments, the Bureau of Curriculum Development (BCD) will conduct an orientation on the CRLA tools prior to their administration. The orientation materials can be accessed through the provided links starting from April 22, 2024, for the RMA and from April 29, 2024, for the CRLA.

Recording and Uploading Results

Teachers are requested to record the learner results in the provided scoresheets. School heads are responsible for ensuring that the school summaries are promptly uploaded to the provided links as soon as all learners are assessed, not later than May 17, 2024.

Funding

The printing/reproduction costs for RMA, CRLA, and Phil-IRI will be covered by the remaining Program Support Funds (PSF) from the FY 2023 (R.A. 11936) General Management and Supervision Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (GMS-MOOE) downloaded to the Regional Offices for the 2023 NLC implementation. Should there be deficiencies in the downloaded PSF, Regional Offices may charge additional expenses from their Local Funds, subject to the usual government accounting and auditing rules and regulations.

These assessments are a significant step towards improving the quality of education in the Philippines. By identifying areas of improvement, educators can tailor their teaching strategies to better meet the needs of their students, ultimately leading to a more effective learning environment.
