Bicam OKs Maritime Zones Bill

July 17, 2024 - In a significant move, the bicameral conference committee on Wednesday greenlit the proposed Philippine Maritime Zones Act. This bill, championed by Senator Francis Tolentino, aims to clearly define the extent of Philippine waters, including vital areas like Palawan and the Philippine Rise. The approved version reconciled discrepancies between Senate Bill No. 2492 and House Bill No. 7819 regarding the classification of Philippine maritime zones. These classifications encompass internal waters, archipelagic waters, territorial seas, contiguous zones, continental shelves, and the exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Senator Tolentino hailed the bill's approval as a milestone. "This clarifies our rights and boundaries," he declared. "Having a law that defines where we can sail and fish strengthens our position." While uncertain about an immediate presidential signature by Monday, Tolentino believes President Marcos Jr. could mention the bill in his upcom...

Suspect in Lake Hotel Triple Homicide Surrenders to Authorities

July 17, 2024 - Early Wednesday morning, the prime suspect linked to the tragic killings of an Australian couple and a Filipino woman at Tagaytay City's Lake Hotel last week turned himself in to authorities voluntarily. Identified as alias "Ronel," a 33-year-old former employee of the hotel residing in Amadeo, Cavite, the suspect surrendered to Mayor Jey Cerrado of Tuy, Batangas, where he had been hiding after the incident. Mayor Cerrado promptly handed him over to Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham Tolentino, who in turn delivered him to the police. According to Lt. Col. Charles Daven Capagcuan, chief of police at the Tagaytay Component City Police Station, the victims were identified as David James Fisk, Lucita Cortez, and Mary Jane Cortez, the latter being a Filipina companion of the couple. Investigations revealed that the suspect harbored a vendetta against the hotel management following his termination from employment, which allegedly motivated the fatal attack on the vic...

VP Sara Duterte Clarifies 'Designated Survivor' Role Amid Controversy

July 17, 2024 - In a statement on Wednesday, Vice President Sara Duterte addressed the public uproar surrounding her decision to appoint herself as the "designated survivor" during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA). Emphatically asserting that her announcement was neither a jest nor a security threat, Duterte clarified her intentions during the Brigada Eskwela National Kickoff. "It is my first time witnessing a Vice President being accounted for attendance in every single thing," Duterte remarked in Bisaya, highlighting the unusual scrutiny she has faced since her announcement. "This is not a joke. It is not a bomb threat. Many have missed the essence of it. If clarity is not understood initially, I question the necessity of further explanation," she added firmly. Earlier, Duterte had indicated that she would not be attending the July 22 SONA, citing her role as the "designated survivor." This term orig...

Philippine Palay Prices Average P24.2 per Kilo in June

July 17, 2024 - The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has released its latest data on farmgate prices of palay (unmilled rice) for June 2024. This information is crucial for understanding the income of farmers and the overall health of the rice industry. The data is collected through the Farm Prices Survey for Palay, conducted during the last five days of each month. Farmgate prices represent the amount farmers receive for their produce at the first point of sale, after deducting any marketing costs they incur. According to the PSA, the average farmgate price of palay in June 2024 reached P24.2 per kilogram, a significant increase of 27.9% compared to June 2023. However, there was a slight decrease of 0.8% compared to May 2024. While the national average price rose, there were variations across regions. Ilocos Region boasted the highest farmgate price at P28.3 per kilogram, reflecting a significant 40.2% year-on-year increase. Eastern Visayas, on the other hand, had the lowest pri...
